SUMMARY

The Mekong Delta (MD), with a relatively new history of
development, is transforming its development state. The development
strategy for the MD in the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050,
envisions that the region will be a place of safety, prosperity, sustainability
and a place worth living. Sustainable development in the region is anchored
in its natural resources and indigenous ecosystems.
This book analyzes the relationships between natural ecological
factors, human beings, their activities, and development over time to
identify the unique characteristics of these relationships in the region.
Based on this analysis, recommendations are made to promote positive
values/traits and address limitations, focusing on changing human behaviour
toward nature and society. The overarching goal is to promote the value of
natural ecosystems and indigenous cultural heritage, fostering sustainable
          development in the evolving context.
This book consists of 13 chapters, covering five key areas: (1) natural
ecology, settlements, and infrastructure; (2) economy and community
development; (3) culture-society and community development; (4) education
and integration capacity; and (5) sustainable development of regional features.

The close relationship between the natural ecosystem, socio-
economics, and the behaviours of inhabitants in the delta has evolved,
creating the unique region’s “cultural features”. The natural ecosystem
serves as the foundation for human behaviour and socio-economic
development. In turn, socio-economic progress influences both human
behaviour and the natural ecosystem. This dynamic interaction shapes the
behaviours of Delta’s inhabitants to align with nature, enabling them to live
and thrive while contributing to the creation of indigenous knowledge
systems (Figure 1). This unique cultural feature is a vital driver of the region's
          future sustainable development.
